Common Anti-Vaccination Arguments (Anti-Vaxxer)

image_pdfimage_print

Those who are anti vaccination, or “anti-vaxxers” for short, are possibly some of the most dangerous people on this planet. This is largely due to how they operate with; scare tactics, pseudo-science, and a lack of any real understanding of what they are talking about. When I have been discussing their point of view with them they have often said things like, “You’ll have to meet my friend to explain the science to you as she understands it better than me”. How can anyone stand up and fight for something they don’t actually understand themselves?

I thought I would collate a list of common anti-vaxxer arguments and a concise rebuttal with relevant links.

The key points we will cover are:

  • Vaccinations cause Autism – Page 1
  • There is mercury in vaccinations and mercury is poisonous – Page 1
  • There is formaldehyde in vaccinations and formaldehyde is poisonous – Page 2
  • There is aluminium in vaccinations and aluminium is poisonous – Page 2
  • Allergens in aaccinations Page 2
  • Why do I need vaccinations if you already have them? – Page 3
  • Catching the virus is better than immunisation/Virus Parties – Page 3
  • Why should I get vaccinated when vaccinations are not 100% effective? – Page 4
  • Confirmation bias – Page 4

Vaccinations cause Autism

This was originally about the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) but anti-vaxxers blew this way out of proportion and made it about all vaccines.

The short answer is, this is false. There is no link what so ever. No link with the MMR or any other vaccination.

There is Mercury in Vaccinations and Mercury is Poisonous

Anti-vaxxers love to use mercury as a reason vaccines are unsafe. Mercury is indeed poisonous in large quantities but the argument shows a distinct lack of understanding about mercury and how it is used in vaccines. There is more mercury in one tin of tuna than all the vaccinations you will receive in your life. Mercury is used in small quantities as part of Thiomersal.

Thiomersal is a preservative which contains small amounts of mercury. It’s used to prevent the growth of bacteria or fungi in the vaccine.

High doses of mercury can be toxic to the brain and other organs. However, no harmful effects have been linked with the level of thiomersal used in such small amounts in vaccines.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is no risk from thiomersal in vaccines. Read the full WHO statement.

Thiomersal is no longer used in any of the vaccines routinely given to babies and young children in the NHS childhood immunisation programme.

But I don’t inject Tuna directly in to my blood!!!Mecury in Fush

True, but it will end up there any way. In fact there have been cases of people who eat 2-3 cans of tuna A DAY over a prolonged period suffering with mercury poisoning.

Does this mean tuna is unsafe? – no of course not. Eating a lot of it every day is unadvised though.

Everything in extreme quantities can kill you, even drinking too much water. How long before anti-vaxxers turn on water?
